Bernard Baily, FONFA Founder Member, Trustee, Visionary and Generous Benefactor

It is with great regret and sadness that we mark the death of our Founder Member and Generous Benefactor, Bernard Baily, who passed away on Monday, 21st November 2016. Our sincere condolences go to Martin and all of Bernard’s family at this sad time.

Bernard was one of the founder members of FONFA and was an instigator of the New Forest Airfields Memorial, situated on the western edge of the World War II airfield at Holmsley South. He was an energetic and enthusiastic Trustee, who took an active interest and attended Trustee meetings up to a few weeks before his death, in spite of longstanding illness, which he bore with characteristic stoicism , patience and good humour. He will be very sadly missed by all who knew him.

When the Merryfield Estate was due for demolition, to make way for a new housing development, he ensured the continuation of the FONFA Museum and Education Centre, in a larger and much more substantial building, by generously underwriting and organising the renovation of the building. By this visionary and generous act, he enabled the continuation of the Museum and thereby commenced the next phase in FONFA’s development, by providing a base for our Outreach Programme, into the future. This will be his lasting Memorial.                                                                                                     Dr Henry Goodall, Chairmen, FONFA Trustees
